..........just trying to get it right. It's hard to see with so many around. You know I don't like being stuck in a crowd. And the streets don't change but maybe the name. I ain't got time for the game.
I refuse to call them Guns N Roses. If i think of them as that name i get the sh.ts. So i think of them as just Axl Rose and then im happy. I have many idiosyncrasies about music stuff. Don’t try to work them out – just accept them (and my correctness). Im happy for Axl to go out and play the old stuff with new players – just don’t use the name. The name means so much to so many people. The use of the name Guns N Roses as a live touring or studio band needs at least Duff and Slash in the band with Axl. John Fogherty doesn’t go out parading himself as Creedence Clearwater Revival does he now????
Anyway.
So i went along to the show really pumped to see Axl. Since i saw him last, Chinese Democracy was released and i like 5 or 6 songs on that record. Better, Sorry, There Was A Time, If The World, etc are all good Axl songs. Again – it aint GNR. But its good. The other thing that i was pumped about was the band that Axl has masquerading around as Guns N Roses. Some great players with him for the live shows. ESPECIALLY Ron Thal. The man is a guitar maestro and you could seriously just have him up there on most of the new stuff, but youd need a second guitarist for the old stuff. Ron’s got a great playing style, plays a double neck (top neck being fretless) and is just a great dude. Real fan friendly too. In short, he is the musical spirit of this current band. Sort of like Izzy was for Guns back when Guns were Guns. Ron takes photos of the crowd at the end of each show and puts them online. Ill let you play Wheres Wally on the photo attached
Great setlist at the show, I really wanted to hear Sorry and Better off the new record. And Patience and Don’t Cry from the old stuff. And i got them all. If Axl had of done Civil War it would have been epic. Lots of pyro too. Im (hopefully temporarily) partly deaf in my right ear as a result. AWESOME!!! From my second row spot i got a great view of it all. Ive lost my voice from singing / screaming along. During You Could Be Mine i think i had an aneurysm. Then later on Axl comes to the front of the stage and is right in front of me and mentions the next song is about a dirty woman. Id heard they had done AC/DC’s Whole Lotta Rosie lately but i was in setlist blackout mode for the last month to keep the surprises to a maximum for moi. Please be Rosie. Please be Rosie. Please be Rosie. And then as the song starts Axl points at me and then Axl Fcuking Rose screams YEAH!!! (Im wearing a AC/DC shirt to totally represent) and then starts the first line “im gonna tell you a story, bout a woman i know. When it comes to lovin, oooohhh she steals the show” It was awesome.
All up over 3 hours of great tunes. A stack of the classic hits and album cuts. Some new material and a few covers. An amazing crowd. And only 35 Euros. Bar.Gain. The only thing that sucked is i wasn’t at the show with friends.
Got to Madrid (lame) yesterday to see the show tonight then tomorrow i go to my future place of residence – San Sebastian – to see the show again tomorrow night. Then i gotta kill two weeks somewhere in Spain while i wait for the “Guns N Roses” UK tour to finish. Then they come back to play in Barcelona which will be my last show of the tour. Theres one show in Zaragoza before that i might go to as well.
Not that this trip was about going to shows......
