When i was a kid (most of you think i still am one) I used to watch this movie with my family a few times a year. Very cool growing up in sunny beachside Kiama on the south coast of New South Wales to then see the stark contrast to my “normal” life as to what was in the movie – huge mountains, snow capped peaks, crystal clear rivers, buildings 500+ years older than my country, and that Castle. That Castle was fcuking huge. When I was a kid the biggest thing ever was either the 50m pool at Kiama Leisure Centre, or Australia’s Wonderland theme park.
The movie was my first exposure to European scenery, Nazi Germany and nuns that sang every fcuking word instead of just talking to each other. I had a nun for a teacher in year 3. Sister Janet. Total cow – i guess thats where my hatred for most of what the Catholic Church stands for started. B.tch used to make the Catholic kids in class sit separate to the non Catholic kids. Segregation much? She was sort of like the penguin in Blues Brothers. Yes i have just called a nun a cow and a b.tch. Theres a special place in hell for people like me.
When i knew i could fit Salzburg, Austria in to my trip post Greece / pre Munich then i made it work so i could see some of the scenery and maybe the movie tour. Arriving into town we got to see much of the scenery from the opening of the movie – the Austrian Alps are some of the most awesome mountains ive ever seen. That afternoon we went for a walk through the city and got to see some of the scenes from the movie – the steps they sang Do Re Mi on and the big fortress overlooking the city for example.
So I also went on a guided tour of the scenes from the movie. Some of you might recognize the scenes from the photos attached. Cool to see the stuff in person – im not the hugest fan of the movie nor is it a top 50 movie of all time for me either – it was just really great to see the place where it was made. But what really stood out was just how beautiful this city is. Austria is a great country to visit. I want to come here in the winter – i think that would not suck at all.

Two last things;
1/ in 1998 i met the eldest son and youngest daughter from the movie. I worked at Grace Bros department store in Sydney and they were there promoting the movie’s re re re re re re re re release and signing copies. I remember thinking that they looked beyond bored talking about the movie for the billionth time. Just like the people involved in the movie tourism in this town.
2/ if they ever remake the movie i think Pink should do the Julie Andrews role. Im serious.
